THE MOVIE
Tragic romances are epically beloved.
Girl meets guy. Against all odds, they’re meant to be. She falls terminally ill. Their love proves stronger than death.
There’s just one problem with Daisy’s tragic love story:
She’s not actually dying.
Daisy has loved Tom since she was sixteen. Twenty-two years later, she has built a gratifying life as a dedicated kindergarten teacher — while quietly continuing to follow the life of the guy who got away. His engagement. His storybook wedding. The birth of his daughter. And then, unexpectedly, his divorce.
Suddenly, Daisy has a second chance.
She engineers a “chance” encounter with Tom, only for their reunion to go spectacularly wrong. Facing the humiliating possibility that he’ll discover just how much she knows about his life, Daisy panics and reaches for the only explanation she can think of.
She has cancer.
Moved by the news, Tom reaches out. They grow closer. And suddenly, after twenty-two years, Daisy is living the love story she always imagined.
Except for the dying part.
Urged by her drag queen best friend and sole confidant, Jack, to tell the truth, Daisy instead finds herself sinking deeper into the lie. A cancer support group. Fake treatments. A shaved head. Then her family finds out. Her kindergarten students start a fundraiser. The mayor honors their heroic cancer-battling teacher at a charity gala.
And Tom proposes.
Now Daisy has everything she ever wanted — provided nobody discovers the increasingly inconvenient fact that she is perfectly healthy.
When the truth inevitably comes out, Daisy has one last question:
Shouldn’t everyone just be happy she’s not dying?
MEET THE CHARACTERS
DAISY
Kindergarten teacher. Hopeless romantic. Truly, a good person.
And a liar — perhaps owing to all the practice required by a first-gen childhood with immigrant parents.
Daisy has spent twenty-two years dancing on her own (literally, including at prom), quietly carrying a torch for the boy she loved at sixteen. When an attempt to reconnect with him goes catastrophically wrong, she tells one terrible lie to save herself from humiliation:
She has cancer.
Now, finally, Daisy has her chance at happily ever after — if she can only survive not actually dying.
JACK
Imagine the dreamiest high school star quarterback grew up not to marry Taylor Swift, but to become Trixie Mattel.
Meet Jackie — a queen determined to shantay, she stay all the way to RuPaul’s Drag Race. And Jackie’s origin story is completely enmeshed with that of her lifelong bestie, Daisy. Twenty-two years after high school, they remain inseparable, fiercely loyal and deliciously codependent.
Every romantic heroine needs a best friend.
This one happens to look better in heels.
TOM
The guy who got away.
He got married. Fathered a beautiful little girl. Got divorced — which works out perfectly, since he’s obviously Daisy’s true love.
Twenty-two years after high school, Tom still has no idea he's been starring in Daisy's love story this entire time.
He also plays the flute like Lizzo.
After all this time, he'll see...
He belongs with Daisy.
